This series comprises annual reports of the Lutheran Deaconess Motherhouse at Milwaukee and of Milwaukee Hospital, which was usually called "The Passavant." Dates range from 1864 through 1954, with the bulk dating from 1909-1934. Reports for both entities are included in this series because the hospital and motherhouse were incorporated under the same charter until 1931, when the hospital was given it own charter, but it was still under the effective control of the motherhouse because its corporate members were the deaconesses and the motherhouse board. Motherhouse reports include a roll of the sisters, the director's report which included the work done at various stations, or places of work, where deaconesses served, general information about the motherhouse and deaconesses, and a list of recommended reading about the diaconate. The annual reports for the hospital are often accompanied by annual reports of the Layton Home for Invalids, which served those with incurable diseases. The Layton Home was on the grounds of the hospital and administered by the hospital. Although the spine title on the bound volume reads "1908-1934," that volume is missing 1908 and 1917-1918. The hospital reports usually include reports of the director, the directing sister and the medical staff; statistics of the medical cases served; donations, endowments, and other financial information; and rules governing the staff and patients. The annual reports of both institutions include pictures of people and buildings associated with the motherhouse or hospital. Both types are written in English. The conditions range from good for many of the unbound reports to fair for others and for the bound volume, where some of the pages are loose.
